Changes in mental health care
As of 2014 changes have been made to the mental health care sector, which is now divided into
- general practitioner care and mental health care support staff
- general basic mental health care
- specialised mental health care
Level 1 is given in the practice of the GP by psychologists, without extra costs. Referral is by the GP and this care is for complaints, no DSM diagnosis. Complaints can vary from adjustment disorders, grief, relationship problems or stress. The sevices provided by the healthcare professional are: triage, consultation, prevention, psycho-education, guidance and self-help E-health.
Level 2 is for mental disorders ( or suspected). Services : diagnosis, treatment including E-health, drug treament and/ or specialist consultation. The disorder must be reported is the referral letter. The opinion as to whether the patient should receive basic mental heath care is in the letter.
Level 3 is for severe high risk and / or complex problems. Services : specialist treatment, advanced specialist treatment, outpatient and inpatient, crisis intervention.

The current guideline for the referral letter to the mental health care is according to the guideline of the NHG/GGZ Nederland for information exchange between the GP and secondary mental health care.
