When should you visit the family doctor/GP?
If you feel unwell, you should consult the doctor/huisarts/GP.A huisarts is a doctor you choose and register with and to whom you go first when you are ill. You visit your GP first with all questions and complaints you may have regarding physical and mental health and sickness. Basic principles of NHG
The GP follows the guidelines of the Dutch College of General Parctitioners (NHG). The scientific debates, the NHG adheres to the following basic principles :
- the natural course of ailments is of major importance
- preference for non-medicinal advice above medicinal intervention
- a careful assessment of the use of new drugs: a new drug must have clear advantages over the currently used drugs and there must be sufficient experience with it to identify any possible side-effects
- preference for treatments by GPs when treatment by medical specialists is equivalent to that provided general practice
The GP and the practice assistant form a double unit. Therefore the NHG has issued information for practice assistants, such as sets of telephone cards (for answering patients' questions via the telephone).
